This section will take you through what hell is as the Bible describes it, some other views, and the big question; What about those that have never heard?
Yes, hell is real. Jesus says in Matthew 25:41 that it's an everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. And later in that chapter in verse 46 He says, "and these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Hell was not intended for us, it was intended for satan and his demons. They made their choice, to go against God and now will reap the consequences of that decision. I believe they know their final destiny and are trying to defy it as they seek to take as many with them as they can.
Know that satan does not like you, he does not want to party with you, he hates you and wants to destroy you. In 1st Peter 5:8-9 it says, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking who he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith..." Jesus said in Luke 16:19-31 that when the rich man and Lazarus died, that Lazarus went to Abraham's bosom and the rich man went to Hades, in torment and agony in the fire.
God does not want to destroy you, He loves you and gave His Son Jesus Christ for you. That you may have eternal life with Him if you want it. You have a choice if you want God and His Savior, which is the way, or not. He does not force you into heaven or hell. It is your choice!
There are plenty of verses that speak of hell as torment, fire, agony, weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Some say hell is just the separation from God, that you did not want Him so now eternity is spent without Him. I disagree, because I think God is everywhere, all the time.
I believe that hell is a real place without the goodness of God. It is His judgement on evil and I think in hell they will see God, as the rich man saw Lazarus, and weep, and I believe they will continue to curse Him. His goodness will be withheld from that place and evil will run it's course. Christ is light that shines in darkness, it brings peace and love. Without Him there is only darkness, hatred and evil. I think it will be an eternity of those that hate God and Christ trying to cross the expanse, scheming on how they can escape to defeat God. It is not a place anyone will enjoy, but eternal torment and pain as their efforts time and time again fall incomplete for all of eternity, and still they will continue to curse and hate Him.
There are a few different views for those that can't grasp that kind of judgement from God, which aren't held by many throughout history but are still views out there.
I should also say that some things are a mystery to us, how exactly it all happens after we die is in the hands of God. He is the Righteous One, Just and Right in all of His ways. He will do the right thing in all cases, we have to trust that, as well as know we are finite fallen beings and He is an infinite Holy God.
Some believe those that deny Christ will be gone gone. When they die, the judgement will be no more, they won't go on in eternity at all.
Some that the separation of God will not necessarily be torment and agony as far as a physical pain but eternally longing for God in regret. I must say that I very strongly disagree with this. The reason is that if they truly end up longing for God then they would have while still alive. I believe they will know Him but become more and more hateful towards Him.
The other is that everyone ends up in heaven, that would be pretty cool, I just don't see that in scripture. The view holds that as we die we will see the goodness of God and the evil is chipped away until we are able to enter the Kingdom, and hell is specifically reserved for satan and the demons. The problem is Jesus didn't teach that, nor any of the apostles. I also think this can be dangerous because many would assume there is a chance after death to figure it all out, I'm afraid that would be risky, and I know I wouldn't want to take that chance.
We see the answer for that in Roman 1:18-23, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things."
We forget that God is sovereign and omnipresent, He knows all things and is everywhere all the time. He has revealed Himself even in nature so that those that call out to Him, He will reveal Himself to them. He will guide them and show them the way.
I believe judgement is based on what God has revealed to you. So if you see the skies and the birds and realize there is a creator above it all, and you die knowing nothing else, then God will judge accordingly. If you believe there is a God and have never heard of Christ, and worship Him, then He will judge accordingly. If you have seen God in His natural revelation, heard of His Son and deny Him, then He will judge accordingly. God does not fit in a box, nor should we put Him in one. He is perfect and infinite and will do what is exactly right for each of us. What I do know is that there is no excuses, when we meet Him we will all give an account for our lives, and if we are covered by the blood of Christ then we will be found righteous in Christ, that I know!
